LEASES ARE DESIGNED TO BE SKIMMED — THAT'S THE PROBLEM

Most people read the rent amount, the move-in date, and the security deposit… then sign. The expensive stuff is buried in the “standard” terms.

WHAT TO CHECK FIRST
1) Fees: late fees, admin fees, “processing”, “amenities”
2) Repairs: who pays for plumbing/electrical/appliances?
3) Entry: can the landlord enter with no notice?
4) Deposit: what counts as “damage” and do they have to itemize?
5) Renewal/termination: auto-renew language, notice windows

A QUICK RULE
If a clause is vague, it usually benefits the party with more power. Ask for specificity.
